A Brief History of Alexander House

The History of Alexander House Hotel

Alexander House has a fascinating history with the property being traced back to Roman times when a Roman road ran past the present western boundary. The oldest part of the building dates back to the 17th Century, with a stone dating back to 1608 can found in the boundary wall.

The house is famed for its grandeur and connections to luminary poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, the Oxley family who had connections with the city of London and the former Governor of the Bank of England who purchased the estate in 1909. In 1984 the mansion was meticulously restored and re-named Alexander House.

In 2002 Utopia Leisure purchased Alexander House and an 18-month redecoration process transformed Alexander House into the elegant, stylish, luxury hotel it is today.

In 2006, Alexander House Hotel proudly opened its flagship Utopia Spa, cementing the hotel's reputation as one of England's finest destination spas in the UK. In 2012 the AA awarded Alexander House 5 stars, making our hotel one of the highest rated hotels outside of London.
