Working with willow is both mindful and a very relaxing activity. Join Lorraine at the picturesque Birtley Woodland Art Space, nestled within the woodland beyond the lake on the Birtley Estate in Bramley. You'll learn how to weave with willow to make some beautiful art pieces - sculptures you can be truly proud to display in your own garden. Join for a full or a half day where you will be able to choose from a selection of items (large and small) to create and then take home with you at the end of the day. A fun and sociable day with fellow enthusiasts touring the beautiful Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The tour takes you on a journey through the region in search of where you'll visit either Greyfriars or Albury vineyards, the Silent Pool Distillery and Tillingbourne Brewery. You will get to taste delicious wines, beers and gins right where they are made and meet the people who make them. Lunch at The Queen's head in Clandon plus transport to & from Guildford train station and between the vineyard, distillery and brewery are all included. What's not to like?
From Rosanna's studio in nearby Cranleigh, enjoy a relaxed crafty morning, afternoon or whole day creating your own leather accessories - choose from a large range including a case (card/phone/glasses), keyring, luggage tag purse or even a bag. All sessions include tuition, materials and as much tea & coffee as you can drink! Classes are small, usually for up to four so you'll receive plenty of assistance and attention - the perfect activity for a birthday, hen party or just to meet up with friends. The annual Investec International Music Festival founded in 2010 brings the very best of classical music performance to the Surrey Hills. World famous artists and renowned orchestras have taken part each year, including violinist Nicola Benedetti and singer Dame Sarah Connolly both of whom are now Patrons of the Festival. Audiences enjoy the variety of intimate venues from historic country houses and baroque churches to splendid auditoriums, mainly located between Guildford and Dorking.
Brooklands has a host of events planned including the Brooklands Mini day when all types of Mini (including the modern BMW models) are invited. From the oldest to the newest, this year’s event will see some of the earliest examples nestling among hundreds of Minis and their variations including vans & pickups. Italian Car Day sees a plethora of vehicles from Lamborghini, Maserati, Ferrari, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Abarth. Italian car owners are welcome to bring theirs to join in with the fun and the The Mercedes-Benz World circuit will see a line-up of cars being demonstrated at lunchtime, while during the afternoon Test Hill will be running, pitting a line-up of cars against the challenge presented by this unique part of Brooklands. Hidden in a wooded valley near Ockley lies a sculpture garden unlike any other. Created 35 years ago, The Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden exhibits an ever-changing collection of contemporary sculpture. Surrounding a 15th century Grade II listed cottage, the grounds have been lovingly restored by owner & renowned landscape designer Anthony Paul. Using a palette of broadleaved, architectural plants, ponds & mature trees, Anthony & his wife Hannah have created a truly magical environment. Artists come from far & wide to exhibit each year & a plethora of materials, themes & ideas awaits - some out in clear view & others cleverly nestled amongst the dramatic fauna. The Abinger Cookery School will fire up your imagination with courses that are practical, inspiring & most importantly fun! The school makes good use of the fantastic Surrey Hills produce available right on our doorstep. Learn some new skills, brush up on some existing ones or become a pro on an advanced course. Autumn courses include a very tempting Indian Cookery Day with Hari Ghotra - mmm.... Or why not master the pasta basics or dive into a fish & seafood day or perhaps learn how to make your own sushi or dim sum? Experience the enchanting effects of fire, light & lanterns in the Edwardian gardens at the National Trust’s Polesden Lacey. The gardens form the perfect backdrop for their new, after-dark experience. As twilight falls, the magic begins -expect the unexpected - glimpse fleeting fairies, spot fiery fish and dragons ablaze. Look out for woodland wildlife sculpted in willow with fairies dancing in the trees as you stroll through the walled garden into an enchanting landscape filled with wonder. Nestling in a fold of the Surrey Hills Ramster is famous for its 25 acres of peaceful woodland and lake & hillside views filled with colour and interest. With a unique 100-year-old avenue of maples, woodland areas with oak and larch, American red gum tree liquidambar and a collection of Japanese acers, the garden is lit with fiery shades of reds and russets in the Autumn months. The teahouse offers a takeaway service (with plenty of outside seating available) for sandwiches, homemade soups, cakes & hot drinks. A scenic 25 minute drive through the Surrey Hills from the hotel.
Savour a delicious wine and cheese experience at our nearest vineyard, just down the road in Albury. Start with a tasting of their Albury Estate sparkling wines (trust us they are superb!), followed by a glass of your favourite accompanied with a selection of English cheeses. Admire the views over the vineyard or take a leisurely stroll amongst the vines; a self-guided tour of the vineyard is a great way to find out more about this wonderful organic vineyard. See The flagship garden of the RHS & one of the world's greatest gardens sparkle and dazzle. Wander the enchanting displays through the trail around the garden to see some of Wisley’s iconic sights in a new light. Venture through Seven Acres, the Rock Garden and Wisteria Walk, as well as other garden areas and marvel at the magnificent trees and shrubs bathed in a spectrum of light. This year, the garden will glow even brighter with more lights, fire candles and fountain displays, as well as the return of a spectacular horticultural display inside the Glasshouse. Hindhead Commons and the Devil’s Punch Bowl are a remarkable landscape. The common is a significant habitat for heathland loving animals and birds whilst the huge natural basin which gives the Devil’s Punch Bowl its name is a true wilderness. With its large swathes of lowland heath, it’s Europe’s largest spring-eroded valley. Now that the A3 has been redirected through a tunnel, visitors can enjoy the peace and quiet of this fascinating landscape. This 5km well sign-posted takes in both Gibbet Hill and The Temple of the Four Winds, each with superb views and on a clear day you'll glimpse the London skyline. The National Trust café at the Devil’s Punch Bowl serves excellent light meals and and cream teas. The car park is a 20 minute drive from the hotel.
Fish for your supper! With a choice of picturesque lakes and conditions suitable for both novice & more experienced fishermen the Albury Estate is a perfect spot to while away a peaceful few hours fly fishing. The lakes are fed by several springs as well as the Tillingbourne River and are well stocked with rainbow trout from the estate fish farm. Full instruction and tackle is available if you are a beginner and looking to try a new sport. Bring your catch back with you and our chef will prepare your trout for supper or store in our fridge until you are ready to go home. Less than a 10 minute drive from the hotel.
